HRTimelines is a transgender healthcare research project created by trans people for trans people. We study the effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for transgender individuals through survey-based research. We seek to create accurate timelines for the physical effects of HRT while taking into account factors including application method, medication dosage, types of medications, and other variables like age or ethnicity.

We currently collect data on when trans people start HRT, what medications they use, and what physical effects they have experienced. If you are interested in contributing to our research, please fill out this form.

About Us

We are Lucas (he/they) and Tessa (any pronouns), the founders of HRTimelines. As two university students who are both part of the trans community, we noticed a gap in available transgender healthcare data and decided to make HRTimelines to help others. We are not medical professionals, but we hope that our research project helps other trans people looking to start HRT or doctors who work with trans patients.

History

Our first survey was built using Google Forms and was released in early January 2023. We received over 150 responses from trans people all around the world and have already gained much insight, though we are still analysing the data. We look forward to sharing findings soon.

Currently, the second version of our survey is hosted here, and we are developing our longitudinal study project. This collects more data about individuals who use HRT, gaining a better understanding about how HRT affects people over time. You will soon be able to sign up for our case study, which is still under construction. Follow us on Instagram to stay in the loop!

Future Plans

We seek to provide trans people with evidence-based expectations for their medical transition. We accomplish this through surveys asking health-related questions and by presenting that data. In the future, we would like to inform trans health decision making, answering, with evidence, key questions about the effectiveness of progesterone or different injection processes, for example.

Our short-term goals include the following:

Data visualisation on this website

Increase longitudinal research to have a higher resolution of changes over time

Collect more information on specific parts of transitioning

Gain a broader reach into trans communities with which we do not currently have contact

Build a community of volunteers to support this work

We are interested in creating better documentation of our findings, including reports and detailed reviews, in the future. We are also considering starting a podcast discussing the effects and impacts of HRT. We both look forward to seeing where this project goes, and we are always looking for feedback and good ideas. If you would like to get in touch, you can find the contact information for this project below.
